When I was around 12 years old, I was on the neoboards looking at shop advertisements. I saw someone post that they were selling faerie paintbrushes for 1 neopoint. I clicked that link faster than I've ever clicked any link in my life. Once I tried to buy it, I was taken to a log-in screen where I frantically entered my password and hit submit. By the time I realized it was too late, my password and email had been changed, and I was locked out of my account. I didn't know the word for it at the time, but I was phished. I immediately told my mom, who proceeded to make a new Neopets account with the username "goodandmad" to send angry neomails to my old account with demands for the scammer to return it. Unfortunately, there was no response, and my old account was iced soon thereafter. Thanks to neopets, I have had a 100% pass rate on every corporate IT phishing simulator test. I think one of the most widely criticized components of early 2000s neopets is all the targeted advertising. One thing that I've never really seen mentioned is the time when Neopets was trading survey data for dips in the rainbow fountain. Basically, if you fill out a survey, you can change the color of your pet without having to spend a ton of Neopoints on a paintbrush. Of course, I could not resist and completed a bunch of them with my real home phone number.
